Teaching
As an educator, I teach my students to embody the traits of respect, gratitude, humility, and passion. I also teach students to see the human behind the music. Too often music is whittled down to scientific or mathematical precision, and the emotion behind what the composer was feeling is lost. I believe that knowing the history of the composer in general, and the composer at that (compositional) period in their lives is more important to the interpretation and sharing of their work, than any theoretical analysis or historical comparison to other composers.
I am currently Assistant Professor of Practice (Voice and Conducting) in the Department of Music at SUNY University at Buffalo. I previously taught both undergraduates and graduate students at SUNY Fredonia. I also have experience teaching children as young as eight years old at Buffalo String Works, Boston Children’s Chorus, and the Jefferson Academy of Music (Columbus, Ohio).
At SUNY Buffalo, I teach voice studio for majors and non-majors; manage and grow the orchestra department and teach curriculum in conducting, opera, film music, and chamber music.
The courses I teach include:
Advanced Conducting
Chamber Music Coaching
Independent Study in Music
Music in Media
Open Studio
Private Voice
